Keynote by Malcolm Langford: Multimethod Research and Socio-Legal Studies

Date: Wednesday 21 August
Time: 09:00-10:00
Venue: Bergen Global, Jekteviksbakken 31

How do we move beyond the ‘paradigm wars’ between different methods and draw on different disciplines to answer complex socio-legal questions? A pluralistic and multimethod approach offers the possibility of transcending ‘what is already known’ and mobilising a wide palette of qualitative, quantitative, doctrinal and computational methods. However, multimethodism has also invited a backlash. Concerns have been expressed about epistemological incongruity, a hollowing out of expertise, and the placing of unrealistic demands on researchers. This keynote lecture presents a broad vision of multimethodism, outlines the possibilities within socio-legal studies with some case studies, and discusses when and how the limitations can be overcome.
