The Impact of EU External Migration Policies on West Africa: Migration Dynamics and the Role of Development Aid

On 27 May, we will host a breakfast seminar examining the consequences of EU external migration policies in West Africa, with a focus on migration dynamics, development aid, and local experiences. The event features contributions from Cathrine Talleraas and Elling N. Tjønneland (both Senior Researchers at CMI), and Ndeye Fatou Ndiaye (Law and Political Science student). The seminar is organised by LawTransform in collaboration with the EFFEXT project at CMI.

Over the past decade, the EU has increasingly relied on externalisation strategies to manage migration, entering into partnerships with African countries to control mobility beyond Europe’s borders. This seminar explores how these policies affect migration routes and governance in West Africa, as well as how development aid is used as a tool for migration management.

The speakers will discuss a range of perspectives: from findings of the EFFEXT research project on externalisation, to the role of Norwegian development cooperation, and how EU policies are experienced and contested at the local level — in particular in Senegal, through the lens of the well-known expression “Barça ou Barzakh?” (“Barcelona or the afterlife?”).
