The Breaking BAD project was part of the Bergen Exchanges 2021.

Panel Title: Autocratization dynamics in Africa

Date: Monday 16 August 2021
Time: 17:15-18:30
Venue: Bergen Global, Jekteviksbakken 31 / Zoom

Africa is a continent where democracy has long been in precarious state but where the global trend towards democratic backsliding is less notable. Why is this so? What are the characteristics of the autocratization dynamics – and counter-forces – that play out on the African continent?

A roundtable discussion with Caroline Bjelland (Research Assistant, UiB), Matthew Gichohi (Postdoctoral Researcher, CMI), Vibeke Wang (Senior Researcher, CMI) and Lisa-Marie Selvik (PhD candidate, CMI) as panelists and Lise Rakner (Professor of Political Science, UiB) as moderator.

This roundtable presents findings from the LawTransform RCN project “Breaking BAD, backlash against democracy in Africa”.
