Documentary screening: Breaking Free

Date: 29 October 2018
Time: 18:00-20:00
Place: Auditorium 1, Jekteviksbakken 31, Bergen.

The Centre on Law and Social Transformation in collaboration with Bergen Resource Centre is happy to invite you to a screening of the documentary film ‘Breaking Free’ ‘Breaking Free’ by the Indian filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan (2015).

The documentary provides an insight into the experiences of the LGBTQI community in India. Shot over a period of seven years, if features personal testimonies from gay and transgender persons and interviews with advocates and activists from across India.

Last month, the Supreme Court of India decriminalized ‘unnatural sex’ between consenting adults by reading down section 377 of the Indian Penal code. There is a common misconception that the section does not affect the LGBTQI community, as there are very few convictions to prove it. The documentary provides concrete evidence that this law has impeded the freedom and growth of LGBTQI individuals in every sphere of their lives. The film has been described as an emotional rollercoaster and shows the difficult journey of the LGBTQI movement, from invisibility to empowerment.

The screening will be followed by a discussion and the audience will be invited to share their reactions.

Popcorn and refreshments will be served!
