Roberto Gargarella: Institutional Changes for Democratic Dialogue

Date/Time: 5th of October 14:15-15:30

Place: Bergen Global, Jekteviksbakken 31

Roberto Gargarella will talk about the deep crisis affecting constitutional democracies around the world. This crisis manifests itself both in a growing lack of confidence in constitutionalism and in an increase in citizens’ dissatisfaction with democracy.

He was recently awarded an ERC Advance Grant for a project that will offer concrete institutional alternatives to channel the demands of democracy and engage with activists and members of civil society, from a conception of democracy as a “conversation between equals”.

His new project aims to design institutional proposals that are both respectful of individual rights and the decisions resulting from democratic dialogue.

About the speaker:

Roberto Gargarella, a full professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Buenos Aires, teaches at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina, and is the director of the “Institutional Changes for Democratic Dialogue» project at the Department of Law at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.
