Announcing here a part of a project examining health system performance for indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon through the lens of tuberculosis (TB) control (1 & 2), that Health & Law Unit’s Research Leader Camila Gianella currently is working . Below you find a short text and links to videos precenting the project.
As in many other tuberculosis (TB) burdened countries, TB research in Peru, as well as TB control strategies focus o.n densely populated metropolitan areas. During the last two decades Peru’s National TB program has prioritized actions in big cities, such as Lima where more than 80% of people with TB live. Despite recognizing indigenous people from the Amazon as a vulnerable group that should be a priority for TB actions, regulations and guidelines for TB control are based on the characteristics of people living in urban settings, located relatively close to primary and complex healthcare facilities.
Tuberculosis Stories illustrate the challenges and resources faced by people with Tuberculosis using the voice of those affected by Tuberculosis (TB), in rural and disperse communities in the Peruvian Amazon. Community health workers, and public health workers, share with us the challenges to access TB diagnoses and treatment The videos seek to raise awareness of the need for appropriate regulations, and strategies to respond to the characteristics and needs of rural and disperse communities.
The videos are part of the project “Examining health system performance for indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon through the lens of tuberculosis control” (MR/P004172/1), funded by the Joint Health Systems Research Initiative (supported by DFID, ESRC, MRC and the Wellcome Trust), with the grant , and implemented by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt at University Cayetano Heredia and the NGO Salud Sin Límites Peru between 2016 – 2017. The project aimed to investigate and identify the key features required by the health system to provide high-quality health services to populations living in rural and disperse communities. The Centre on Law and Social Transformation (CMI / UIB) contributed with funds for the video’s production.

Al igual que en muchos otros países con alta carga de tuberculosis (TB), la investigación de TB en el Perú, así como las estrategias de control de la TB se focalizan en áreas metropolitanas densamente pobladas. Durante las últimas dos décadas, el Programa Nacional TB del Perú ha priorizado acciones en las grandes ciudades, como Lima, donde vive más del 80% de personas con TB. A pesar de reconocer a los pueblos indígenas de la Amazonía, como un grupo vulnerable y prioritario para las acciones en TB, las normas y guias para el control de la TB se basan en características de personas que viven en entornos urbanos, relativamente cercanos a centros de salud primaria y establecimientos de alta complejidad.
Los relatos de Tuberculosis ilustran sobre los desafíos y recursos que deben enfrentar personas con Tuberculosis, recurriendo al testimonio de personas afectadas por la TB, en comunidades rurales dispersas de la Amazonía Peruana. Agentes comunitarios de salud y trabajadores de salud pública, comparten con nosotros los desafíos para acceder al diagnóstico y tratamiento de TB. Los videos buscan elevar la conciencia sobre la necesidad de normas y estrategias apropiadas para responder a las características y necesidades de comunidades rurales dispersas.
Los videos son parte del proyecto “Examinando el beneficio del sistema de salud para los pueblos indígenas de la Amazonía Peruana a través del lente de peograma de control de la tuberculosis” (MR/P004172/1), financiado por la Iniciativa Conjunta de Investigación de Sistemas de Salud (apoyada por DFID, ESRC, MRC y el Wellcome Trust), subvencionado y aplicado por London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, el Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt de la Universidad Cayetano Heredia y la ONG Salud Sin Límites Perú, entre 2016-2017. El proyecto está dirigido a investigar e identificar las principales características requeridas por el sistema de salud, para proporcionar servicios de salud de alta calidad a poblaciones rurales que viven en comunidades dispersas. El Centre on Law and Social Transformation (CMI / UIB) contribuyó con fondos para la producción de los videos.
