On 5 November the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, Hungary, hosted the CHARM-EU Annual Conference 2024 “Intercultural Learning and European Universities”, bringing together delegates from the nine universities part of the alliance.
The panel Global South Perspectives in European Higher Education was chaired by Priscila Alvarez-Cueva (University of Barcelona) and had Marjanneke Vijge (Utrecht University), Umesh Bawa (University of the Western Cape) and Lara Côrtes (UiB-CMI LawTransform coordinator) as panelists. They were asked to share their experiences in collaborating across the EU and the Global South in higher education and to reflect on the challenges and opportunities they face. In her presentation, Lara mentioned how LawTransform, which was established in 2014 based on collaboration with partners in the Global South, has expanded its scope over the years to become a global research hub on how law and courts change society. She emphasized how the format of the Bergen Exchanges on Law & Social Transformation works as a platform for horizontal collaboration, and presented the South South Network as a great example of how this type of collaboration can generate original and vibrant initiatives. The audience participated with important questions and provocations, highlighting power asymmetries between partners as a challenge that needs our close attention.
