Clara Burbano-Herrera


Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University

Clara Burbano-Herrera is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University. She was a Fulbright Research Fellow at Harvard University (2014-2016) and Visiting Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (spring 2016). She is co-founder and executive member of the Inter- American Human Rights Network (composed of 9 universities in Europe, the United States and Latin-America), She co-hosts a Blog on Top International Human Rights Courses, Traineeships & Jobs in Europe, and She is Editor-in-Chief of the ‘Inter-American and European Human Rights Journal’.

Clara holds a PhD in Law from Ghent University (Jurisprudential analysis of Provisional Measures under the European and the Inter-American Human Rights System), an LLM in Fundamental Rights from the Faculty of Law of the University Carlos III of Madrid (Spain), a Postgraduate Degree on Constitutional Law from the National University of Colombia (Colombia), and a Master of Law from the University of Los Andes (Colombia). She is also a lawyer.

Her research focus on the intersection between international law and human rights relates to the role of regional human rights organs in the prevention of violation of human rights; with particular focus on interim measures. She has been involved in research projects, including on the conditions of detainees in Africa and the Americas, the right to health with special focus on reproductive rights and maternal mortality in Kenya, and access to the three main regional human rights systems.

Recent (collaborative) books include, The Inter-American Court of Human Rights: Theory and Practice, Present and Future (Intersentia Publishers, 2015) and What Can be Learned from International Human Rights Bodies (Intersentia Publishers, to be published in 2017). Clara is author of Provisional Measures in the Case Law of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, (Intersentia Publishers, 2010) and co-author of Procederen voor het Europees Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens (Litigating before the European Court of Human Rights) (Intersentia Publishers, 2011).
