BEYOND REPORTING: Sexual Violence in Schools and the Challenges of Protecting Awajún Youth in Condorcanqui, Peru

Despite legal reforms to address sexual violence in Peru’s schools, Awajún girls in Condorcanqui continue to face significant barriers to protection and justice. Beyond Reporting examines how these protections work in practice, documenting how inadequate resources, procedural delays, discrimination, and institutional practices that protect accused teachers contribute to impunity.

The policy brief explores the financial and emotional burden of seeking justice, alongside the work of Indigenous organisations that accompany survivors and help families navigate the reporting process. It sets out recommendations to improve access to services, strengthen accountability, and support community-led prevention, arguing that legal reforms must be matched by the resources and institutional commitment needed to make protection effective

The brief forms part of the project “Intersections of Gender, Ethnicity and Mental Health: A Study of Sexualities among Awajún Youth”, funded by CONCYTEC–PROCIENCIA. The brief is authored by Camila Gianella Malca, Paola Patiño Rabines, Nubia Bonopaladino, Gabriela Narváez, and Maykel Pachas.
