Fieldwork interviews can be a daunting prospect, especially when facing a challenging situation or interviewing elites. But what are the real-life experiences of fieldwork and how is best to approach interviews?
At this breakfast seminar, three PhD candidates will reflect on their experiences of conducting fieldwork interviews in challenging situations, in conversation with Salla Turunen, who is about to leave for fieldwork. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session where you can ask about your own preparations for fieldwork or more about the speakers’ experiences.
Marianne Tøraasen (CMI) recently returned from fieldwork in Haiti where she interviewed female judges and prosecutors about their experiences of life working in the Haitian judiciary. However, while she was there, the country faced mass protests and significant portions of the judiciary and universities closed down.
Lisa-Marie Selvik (UiB) is part of the Breaking BAD project and is researching civil society actors and their response to the ongoing backlash against democracy. Her fieldwork took place late last year in Ghana.
Espen Stokke (UiB) is currently researching diaspora organisation in relation to the Syrian conflict. He has also conducted fieldwork in Tunisia.
Salla Turunen is a PhD candidate at CMI and is about to leave for fieldwork where she will be based at the UN in New York and Geneva and interviewing UN practitioners on their perspectives and understandings of humanitarian diplomacy.
